Linux Wikipedia Taking On Google And Yahoo!

Admin wrote: Most of us are already aware of Wikipedia’s reach & popularity. Performing a search in Google or Yahoo for information, products etc is almost certain to show a Wikipedia result. This December, in case you haven’t been keeping up, Wikipedia will be launching “Wikia Search”. Click here to see a recent news report.

Being a controversy in the online world of fact and fiction, Wikipedia has been hit from all over with questions regarding the reliability of its content. But the truth is Wikipedia’s content is being used on a regular basis all over the world by other sites, by college students for their homework and for countless other purposes.

Most of the controversy around Wikia Search is that it will be going up against Google and Yahoo. It’s unlikely Wikipedia believes it will be competitive with the Big Two on launch day. To succeed in this arena, Wikipedia is taking the long view. The underlying implication, of course, is that Wikia Search can steam roll both Google & Yahoo.

What will separate this search site from others? Basically Wikia Search has a combo of human editing and computer editing. There is much talk about this so no matter what anyone is saying about how futile or great this idea is, we know a few things will happen on launch:

  • People will test the hell out of this thing

  • Based on those tests they will write comments, complaints and anything else they can think of about the site

  • The publicity alone within the first 6 months will be the talk of all major news and online news sources.

  • Webmasters and SEO experts will be signing up to be the ones that have some control over the results

  • People will be buying stock the moment it becomes available for purchase

  • Again, Wikipedia will be creating a frenzy of results both good and bad!

To out-do Google or Yahoo, Wikia Search will need much more than just a creative search filter. Many webmasters may at first become editors just to keep competitors from dominating the search results, but, in the end, Wikia Search is likely to go the way of DMOZ - overwhelmed with submissions and understaffed.
